K-1st Grade Activities for Music at Home

Kindergarten and first grade students spend a lot of time experiencing (by listening to and moving to) and making music. We learn about steady beat and different instruments. We learn that melodies can go up or down and that songs can be fast or slow. On this page, you will find links to videos and games to help your child continue these experiences.
The following link will take you to a video about musical instruments. This short video will show your child various instruments and what those instruments sound like. As you watch the video, think about the answer to these two questions: 1. What is your favorite instrument?
2. What can you use to make music?

Now, can you find something in your house you can use to make an instrument?
Kindergarteners and first graders love to move! We have used the following video in class when we were learning about fast and slow. It's a silly song that speeds up every time. Are YOU a Ram Sam Master??

One of the concepts we talk about in music is form or how a song is built. In Kindergarten and first grade, we start by listening for same and different. The game at the following link is a cute listening game. Click on the octopus in the center and listen very carefully to the rhythm he plays on his bongos. Then, click on the octopus on either side and listen for the rhythm that is the same as the first one. This is a fun game to test students' listening skills. Enjoy!

We are so fortunate to live so close to Music City, USA also known as Nashville, the home of country music. During this time of quarantine, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville is closed. However, there are resources on their website that are invaluable in music education.

The following page is CMHOF Fun at Home. Here you will find resources to explore exhibits, learn about instruments, and create your own record label.
